Brian Finds Purpose in His Life Passions

Walk into Brian Brewer’s room, and his passions are immediately evident. Posters of trucks cover most of the wall space. He has an impressive collection of model cars, including an eighteen-wheel multiple-car carrier, complete with a load of cars, that he keeps dust-free under Plexiglas. Brian explains that his passion goes far beyond the cars and trucks. He’s also interested in construction equipment like backhoes and dozers, and he’s fascinated by freight. He likes the patterns and processes that take merchandise from one part of the country to another. He spends free time in Commerce City roaming the truck companies learning about freight.

Another favorite haunt is a local model train store on South Broadway. Brian’s friend Chris gave him one of the best gifts he’s ever received: a model train layout that spans six feet by four feet. His push-button controls can move the train and tracks, and he has installed a grain elevator and a large gas storage tank, complete with a fleet of tankers.

Brian is expanding his horizons through participating in sports and looking at job opportunities. He recently started taking Karate classes every Wednesday, and he’d like to work his way up to black belt status. Brian is also an award-winning Special Olympics athlete, focusing on shot-put, the 100 meter dash and the 100 meter relay. He is looking at some new options for work and finding out what it would take to work for UPS.

Brian also enjoys an active social life. He loves hanging out with friends, and if he’s headed to a restaurant, he always picks Chinese food. His host home provider, Dannette, is helping Brian stay focused on healthy eating to control his diabetes, and he is part of many extended family gatherings. Brian is hoping he’ll get a chance to join Dannette and her fiancé, Jose, when they get married in Puerto Rico later this year. While Brian enjoys nurturing his longstanding passions, he’s always finding new ways to grow.
